A weekend in Vienna

Posted in - LIFE by esteechan on 31/08/2014

For another kyudo seminar, but this time it’s based in a lovely dojo. Shooting outdoor feels a whole lot different to shooting in a sports hall, especially in the feeling and perception of the matos (targets). The city itself was very pleasant as well. It is indeed the ‘city of music’ what with the many street musicians everywhere we went and young students (many Japanese) carrying instruments in and out of the airport. Pictures of Mozart and Klimt were prominently plastered in every corner and souvenir shop. I liked them at school especially Mozart’s bright and cheerful violin sonatas (my all-time favourite ‘Violin Sonata No.32 in B flat, K454’), and Klimt’s beautifully detailed paint daubs in his garden pieces had been a subject of inspiration in some of my old coursework. As well as art and music, the food there was great too (they are particularly good at making dishes with potatoes!); transport and getting around the city was easy and stress-free (very different to London); amazing classical architecture as expected, and friendly people. A very relaxing city.

2020 Olympics in (Neo) Tokyo

Posted in - LIFE by esteechan on 17/06/2014

Recently rewatched Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA アキラ, and to my surprise it’s set in Neo Tokyo in the year 2019 – a year before their Olympics. Coincidentally it will also be the Tokyo 2020 Olympics that year for us. It’s amazing how they predicted that. Just hope it isn’t anything like in the film…

Childhood Heroes

Posted in - ARTWORK, - LIFE, Project Nostalgia by esteechan on 26/05/2014

When growing up, my childhood superheroes were Kamen Riders and Ultramans. I remember my uncle in Hong Kong used to record Cantonese dubbed versions of these shows on VHS tapes and would send them over to us in boxes and boxes. Those were happy days.

An illustration I did as part of a gift for my kyudo sensei. He likes foxes very much.

A weekend in Budapest

Posted in - LIFE by esteechan on 14/03/2014

Budapest in mid-February was interesting. I was there for a weekend 弓道 (kyudo) seminar with a lovely sensei from Japan. Shooting with other archers was fun and I had learned a lot from them.

It was surprising in that the weather in the city turned out pretty nice and warm (we were expecting sub-zero temperatures!). It was pleasant – had a lot of delicious Hungarian comfort-food and saw beautiful things everywhere, especially the pastel coloured buildings around the river Danube.

Makiko Ui ~ “Ainu, Portrait of the Wind”

Posted in - LIFE by esteechan on 22/08/2013

Today I saw some very moving photos of the Ainu people by photographer Makiko Ui. I especially liked the ones with children – their innocence and purity shone through. You can see her work now at the National Geographic store in London until 27 August.

Nostalgic Song 少年期

Posted in - LIFE by esteechan on 17/06/2013

A song that I heard while I was at the Fujiko.F.Fujio Museum sparked nostalgic memories of my childhood of when me and my brother and sister would watch Doraemon and many various animes on VHS tapes everyday (Cantonese dubbed versions recorded by my uncle in Hong Kong). The songs were luckily kept in Japanese so it was brilliant listening to this particular piece again which I haven’t heard in about 20 years! The song is 少年期 (shounenki) by Tetsuya Takeda, and it was played at the end of the movie called ドラえもんのび太の宇宙小戦争 (Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars). Somebody uploaded a clip of the song on Youtube :)

Nippon ni ikimashita! 日本にいきました!

Posted in - LIFE by esteechan on 16/06/2013

Well, that explains my lack of recent update. I was on holiday in Japan for 3 weeks, and during that time I managed to visit a decent number of places throughout Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo! It was so dynamically different to the UK, but I was able to settle into their system after a short while of being there. [Photos of my travels are on Instagram]
