Hell on the plane

Posted in - SKETCH by esteechan on 09/07/2012

Everybody knows the pain of sitting in economy class for 13 hours – except for the mouse in this case, who is in premium with plenty of leg space and cocktails! Old doodle I thought I’d share… (yep, sadly that sheep gave up).

The Names Behind the Rabbit

Posted in - ARTWORK, - SKETCH by esteechan on 24/06/2012

There might have been some confusion between the characters Lantoh and Vibbon – but after thinking about it, I realised that they’re actually the two names of the same character! It may sound a bit funny for not knowing very clearly who my character is, but in fact those names have evolved during the development of the character itself and not realised in an instant. The name Lantoh is used more often in my art, whereas Vibbon is used more for avatar or representation of the character. Just a little history (if you’re interested)…

The design of the simple-looking rabbit, I think, must have been inspired by Trippy from one of my old game designs. The minimalistic look of the rabbit character was interesting to me because the rabbit shape was very strong and stylised, but also looks mysterious due to its plain facade. This led to a simple doodle in my old sketchbook of a similar looking rabbit but with a few more features to give it more personality. Most prominent were his big white eyes, chiseled ears and big teeth. In many of the older sketches he smokes, and gives off a lame and lethargic kind of feeling – this was perhaps why I named him Lan-Toh or Lantoh because in Chinese it is 爛兔 (literally ‘broken-rabbit’) or can sound like 懶兔 (‘lazy-rabbit’)!

So what about the name Vibbon? This was probably more of an online alias and more abstract than Lantoh, but nonetheless a more interesting name to me. The name must have been inspired by a music game I’ve played called Vib-Ribbon, which has a vector white-outlined rabbit character called Vibri – who is also a nice abstract representation of a rabbit. I guess in the end, the name Vibbon sounds more cute and fun in an abstract sense; and Lantoh sounds more frank, literally – however, they are both names for this same rabbit who is still developing as I draw…

I wonder why when I draw in my sketchbook I always end up with some kind of organic growth/matter. Could it be fundamentally linked to my abstract concern for natural shapes and forms? particularly in the development of them…
