SURREALITERALISMS

Posted in # SURREALITERALISMS, - ARTWORK, - DESIGN by esteechan on 01/09/2009

This was an original personal project about playing with the intricate and ambiguously-possible (yes!)  ‘sounds’ or phonetic ‘tones’ when pronouncing the Chinese four-character phrases or 成語 (don’t know if there is a word for that in English…perhaps Chinese proverbs?) and showing them in the most ‘literal’ sense possible! This inevitably conjured up many interesting and humorous ideas, and often surrealistic in style when illustrated. I would like to continue to express as many Chinese 成語 as possible, and hopefully introduce an unusual, new and fun way of looking and understanding them. I coined the word ‘surrealiteralism’ because the art is surreal and literal at the same time.
